#MeetTheTeam - Melissa Theng

In the lead up to the region’s much anticipated events this May, we’re excited to share with you the brilliant minds behind the scenes. This week, we meet Melissa, who is the Alpha Regional Gathering (ARG) Main Coordinator. Melissa coordinates the logistics of various teams behind #LC18 and #EA18, to ensure that everything runs smoothly and efficiently leading up to the week-long event.

What’s the best part of being involved in ARG?

It’s an immense privilege to organize such a historical event in the life of the Alpha Hub here in Kuala Lumpur. This is the first time that we are bringing the leadership conference from London to KL, and I speak for the entire team, that there’s this immense privilege of being part of something monumental. At the same time, it’s the privilege of being able to organize something that will really bless the delegates.

What’s the process like coordinating different teams for ARG in order to make it happen?

We have monthly meetings where we pull all the different teams together and it's not a long meeting (it’s 1 to 1.5 hours) where we update each other broad level stuff so that everyone is kept informed. Whichever area a particular person is in charge of, we leave that person very much responsible for that area. There are also lots of side meetings happening  with the various people concerned and I’m kept informed with decisions and in the monthly committee meeting.

Is there any challenge that you face putting it altogether?

We need to ensure that everyone is coordinated. While we have vertical teams for various events which would look into what that particular event needs, we should also look across.

We constantly remind ourselves of what we could do best to give to our delegates. It’s not about  challenging ourselves, more than it is to ensure delegates leave this experience, feeling something special. Because we know that what you experience will last longer than what you know, so we want to show them an out-of-this world hospitality, graciousness, and welcoming. We’ve been running EA for the last 2 years, but this year we really want to up our game, create a 'wow'.

What’s the difference from this event from the past two years?

The main difference is that this is the first year we are combining HTB London’s Leadership Conference with Experiencing Alpha. By bringing it into KL, we are able to send a lot more people in the region to come. The event is designed in a way that ensures that delegates will gain a lot more through the combined programmes.

What do you personally looking forward to for this big event?

Personally, I’m looking forward to how the Holy Spirit will move. In many of the events I’ve been to, above and beyond what we can plan on paper, there is the prayerfulness and leaning on the wisdom of God in our team.

Having brothers and sisters in Christ from different nations worship together in a big gathering like this is very special. There is a sense that God is moving across the region. I'm really looking forward to what the Spirit has in store for us, the delegates, churches, and ministries.

To the delegates :

Lean in! Like what the bible says, 'you reap what you sow'. I encourage every delegate to come with expectation, anticipation and have their hearts prepared  for God to speak to them. Whether it’s through the speakers, programme, or through one another, look out for opportunities to bless and pray for one another and engage.

LC18 is on the 21-22nd of May 2018. For more info and to register, please visit htbb.org/lc18

Sheela's Story

The idea of running Alpha in the workplace honestly stemmed from a practical reason – late working hours were a barrier to my colleagues being able to attend Alpha at church. It made sense to bring Alpha to the workplace for those who were interested to give it a go.
